Weybridge
There's not an awful lot riverside at Weybridge, being the start of the River Wey and the Wey Navigation, but there are a couple of good pubs and the Weybridge Mariners club. A welcoming if noisy bunch, their own robust brand of boating is good fun and the don't leave anyone out! If you turn to port just before Shepperton lock you'll head towards Town lock and the National Trust boundaries. Don't pass Town Lock without buying a National Trust licence. The River Wey is now very much non-navigable, but the Wey Navigation is a pleasant canal on which to pass a week or so. If you want to stay on the Thames moor up opposite the weir stream, next to the rowing club, and head up to the road where you will find The Minnow and The Old Crown, two very different pubs.
The Minnow is part of a chain offering a good standard of food and modern wines and beers at modern prices with very little of the traditional pub atmosphere.
The Old Crown by comparison is a family pub which has been with the Redknap family for several generations and serves home cooked food with an up to date twist. They keep an excellent cellar and although their wine list is short, the wines are excellent. The also offer a stream side garden for nice days when you want to watch the water go by. This pub has long been a stopping point for boaters using the Wey Navigation, and it has a longstanding reputation. Unlike so many riverside pubs with good food, the prices have been kept down, so your bank manager can breathe a sigh of relief.
If you really need the shops, it's about a mile or so into town - just pass The Old Crown on your right and keep going. At the top of the hill you'll find two Chinese take aways, Waitrose, Pizza Express and Dominos Pizza, a kebab van (most evenings), a really good Italian restaurant, a Mediteranean bar, a Champagne bar, a car spares shop, several dry cleaners, two Indian restaurants, Boots the Chemists, W H Smiths, three florists, two bridal shops, too many pubs to mention, restaurants, shoe shops, clothes shops - all at Weybridge prices - you have been warned.
