Days Lock
The lock keepers at Days Lock have obviously had time on their hands at some stage, because one of them added to his duties by organising the World Poohsticks Championships here. The TMYC stop here every year to compete for their own Poohsticks Challenge Cup on the Little Whittenham footbridge. There are plenty of moorings here, both behind the lock and along the bankside, making it a delightful place to stop for a barbecue or picnic. If you're up to the walk, you can get to Long Whittenham and Little Whittenham by crossing the river and following the footpath over Days Lock Island, down to the church. In the opposite direction, you can get as far as Dorchester. But I don't recommend attempting either walk unless you are young and fit or a seasoned walker. There's not much but a few pubs, a newsagents and a post office at either end, so you might be happy to moor up and enjoy the countryside instead.
It may interest you to know that Days Lock is the main guaging station for measuring the flow of water in the Upper Thames.
