Places to Moor on the Thames

There are two types of moorings available on the Thames - permanent and temporary. You will need to refer to you map or locally posted notices for the details of temporary moorings, as these are often goverened by landowners and other authorities. Where the terms are known, we have listed them.

The list of places below will take you to temporary moorings. When looking for a visitors mooring, don't forget that marinas and clubs are often happy to welcome visitors and offer a more secure mooring with better facilities than being bankside. If you'd prefere to use a marina or club, go back to the home page and choose Yacht Clubs or Marinas from the navigation bar. It is often difficult to offer a landmark for a bankside mooring, and you will need to carry a good river map with you to pinpoint moorings. We recommend Stanford's Map of the River Thames, available from all good chandlers and book shops for about £5.

When using a public mooring always play it safe - make sure your mooring pins are visible by painting or covering the ends with something bright and highly visible, even in the dark. Drop anchor and make sure your lines tie off on the boat. By all means tie off ashore, but bring the line back to the boat and secure the working end onboard. A double loop round a shore bollard can also stop the line being easily slipped over the top. If you are outside another boat put out your own shore lines to prevent your boat being cast adrift, as well as tying securely to the other vessel. Don't rely on other boats shore lines.

The river above Abingdon becomes increasingly non-navigable. For this reason we request that you check your river map for moorings above Sandford Lock. Depth and bridge heights dictate that most yachts won't get this far, and for those boats that venture this far up river you will get better information in narrow boat guides and Oxford boating guides. For those that want to see Oxford by boat, but can't get that far up, we can recommend a trip on the public boats available from Nags Head Island, Abingdon.

For permanent moorings, go to the home page and follow the link to Marinas on the navigation bar. We cannot list residential moorings or those let privately. Waterstones estate agents offer a good list of moorings for sale as well as properties with moorings, and we recommend that you contact local boat clubs or check the local papers for moorings available privately. Quite often a local marina or engineer will know of someone who is letting a private mooring nearby.
