ABOUT THE ANGEL

This flag is in support of the victims of 9/11/01, their families, the New York Fire Department and the people of New York.  Please feel free to copy it to your web pages to show your support.

In 1989 I went on my first up river cruise with the Thames Motor Yacht club.  It proved addictive.  In 2001 I offered to organise the clubs up river cruise for the first time.  It became a fraught and nerve racking experience.  There I was, having put my big foot straight in my big mouth, with very little knowledge of stops along the river, and not knowing where to find the information.  One of our flag officers kindly gave me what little paperwork he had, and armed with a good river map and a telephone I set about organising a two week holiday afloat for 20 people.

I would love to say it proved a relaxing fortnight, but it was torture.  Each night I walked into a different place, armed with my magic clipboard, and prayed that everything would be alright.  Fortunately it was.  It was made even better by the obvious relish with which my fellow cruisers indulged themselves.  At the end of the holiday I was exhausted, elated, almost bankrupt ...
... and determined to do it again!

I know I'm not alone in being lost up river, not knowing where to find facilities or moorings, a shower, a hearty meal, good shops or simply a half decent pint of beer!  And because of that, I decided to create The Up River Angel - a website purely devoted to up river cruising.

You'll find a list of all the restaurants and pubs that I can track down along the way, notes from my personal experiences - good and bad, a sheet of boating resources, contact numbers, yacht clubs, links to other great sites, and a link to the TMYC Website Pages where members can find the details of the TMYC up river cruises.

This year The Angel is proud to offer a cruise planning service. If you want to cruise the Thames, and don't want the bother of finding the route, making all the bookings, chasing down moorings or menus, just contact the Angel and we can do all the work for you.

Feel free to make mention of The Up River Angel on your own websites, or add the banner on your links page.  We just ask that you not misquote us.  And if you are a restaurant, pub, shop, leisure centre, marina, Yacht Club, boating organisation, chandlery, hire boat centre, or anything else to do with the river, and you'd like to appear on The Angel, send us your details and we'll give you a mention.  We cannot guarantee to mention everybody, but our criteria are that you are to do with the non-tidal Thames, or you're very close to the Thames, and offer a service that could prove useful to boaters.

We'd love to hear of fellow boaters experiences along the river, see your pictures and hear of facilities you can offer, so do drop us an e-mail.

To keep you from getting lost on the website, whenever you click on the Angel at the bottom of the page she'll take you to the previous page, right the way back to this home page.

Important Information:

If The Angel has given your establishment a poor rating, please bear in mind that this is only our experience of you.  If we find our experience not to be typical, we will happily change the rating.

The Angel would love to include a section of people and places to avoid, but feel that legally it may not be such a good idea.  We are happy, however, to publish letters from people that have had a good or bad experience of somewhere, and will allow you to judge for yourselves!  If you'd rather not have your letter published, please say so and we promise not to put it on the web.

Anonymous letters or e-mails will NOT be published.

Unfortunately, given the ever-changing face of the Thames, it is not always possible for The Up River Angel to guarantee it's information is the latest - or as accurate as we would wish it to be. Should you find any incorrect information on this site, please do not hesitate to contact us immediately and we shall correct this oversite, helping to keep The Up river Angel as accurate as possible.
